Repair, Replace, Upgrade

Looking ahead we have the Coastal Classic and some upgrades, broken and lost equipment from the previous race.

Upgrade: New cabin top winches with self-tailer

Broken: Multi Function Display

Lost: Spinnaker Sheets

Upgrade:

I had meet Ron a neighboring berth holder in Westhaven, he and his wife are working on their yacht whilst living aboard getting ready to sail the world in retirement. It turns out Ron works for Absolute Marine and so sorted me out a set of Harken 46.2 ST. Next I needed backing plates for the inside of the cabin, the current ones were carbon fiber so I got in touch with C-Tech and sent them the Harken template.

I also needed the the bolts and nuts (also a few eye nuts for internal hanging); these came from ANZOR. Next was Mastic which I got from Sailors Corner.

  1. Removed old winches.

  2. Epoxy old holes except two

  3. I taped together the two carbon backing plates, then used a biro and pencil through two of the existing holes from the smaller Lewmar winches, creating a jig.

  4. Mastic in the holes and around base of new Harken winches.

  5. Nuts and a couple eye nuts.

The MFD (multi function display) was our deck based chart plotter, so we needed another one as it has the Man Over Board button which is required for CAT2 racing certificate. The Auckland boat show was on the weekend the accident happened so we rolled in and found Lusty and Blundell who are the official Raymarine dealers and negotiated an older unit that would fit the existing hole. We could not go bigger as the magnetic compass was close by and the minimum distance recommended

What I learnt from this was that bigger unit would have meant a new hole, but the “nearly” the same size meant a loose fit and extra precautions with epoxy and the gasket.

Magnetic compass to the right just on the limit of safe distance.

Replace

We lost one spinnaker sheet but decided to replace with both starboard and port and keep the remaining one as a spare. We also had a set of light wind sheets made at the same time. Thanks to Geordie Mcnabb for the amazing splicing.
